For a casual romantic look or a polished special occasion updo, the Half-Up Spiral Bun hairstyle is always a dependable favorite. It’s easy to master and perfect for celebrating waves and curls.
What you will need:
– A thin ponytail holder
– 3 bobby pins
– flexible hold hairspray (optional)Watch the Video Tutorial here!
Step 1 – The Half-Up
Begin with dry hair and choose your favorite parting style. In this tutorial, my hair is parted to the side.

Gather both sides of your hair, taking care to avoid separating curl clumps (which could cause frizz). I like to leave down some of the hair in the middle/back to help create more volume at the bottom and keep the bun lightweight.
Pull forward a few loose curls in front of the ears to soften the look.
Next, secure the ponytail with a thin ponytail holder above eye level to give your bun height at the crown of your head.
Once the ponytail is in place, check all sides, and any finishing touches on the top and sides before beginning the bun.
Step 2 – The Spiral Bun

Loosely twist the length of your ponytail and wrap it around the ponytail holder to create a spiral bun.
Then, lightly pull the edges of the bun out to the side, to widen and flatten the bun.
Secure the bun in place with a least 3 bobby pins evenly spaced around the bun. The trick is to insert the bobby pins in the center of the twist, rather than at the far edge of the bun. This helps to conceal the pins and gives more support to the center of the bun.
Finishing Touches
To tame or tuck in flyways, Kenra 25 is the perfect non-sticky, natural-looking flexible hold hairspray. You can spray it right onto your hair and rake it in for a quick finishing touch. Or, you can apply the hairspray to your fingertips and press over particular curls to add more definition.
