If your curls wake up messy, you’re not alone. Try this quick refresh routine to refresh your morning curls in under 10 minutes. Here’s to happier curl days ahead!

It starts with the night routine
Morning hair can often have stretched-out curls, wonky bits, and frizz. That’s all to be expected after sleeping on your hair for hours. However, here are some quick tips for protecting your curls overnight that will help your hair look better in the morning and reduce morning refresh time.
Protect your curls while sleeping.
- Wear your hair up overnight to protect the top layer of curls as much as possible.
- Use a silk pillowcase, bonnet, or hair buff.
The Damp Refresh Routine
What You’ll Need:
Alligator styling clip + water + hand mirror + gel or foam/mousse (optional)
For a full refresh, try these 4 steps to be ready to go out in under 10 minutes! You’ll need an alligator styling clip, hand mirror, water, and your wash day gel or foam.
01. Morning Hair Prep
After taking your hair down in the morning, let your hair settle for 10-15 minutes before refreshing. You might not refresh as much as you thought after your hair has a chance to find its shape again.
02. Separate large curl clumps
With loose curl types like mine, several curl families can be nested together or intertwined. Gently unravel them to give them their own space and add volume without frizz.
03. Shake out the roots
Gently reach through your hair to your scalp and shake back and forth at the roots. Use just the pads of your fingers to shake and lift any matted hair off the scalp. Be careful not to scratch your scalp as that can cause irritation.

04. Section your hair from top to bottom
Use alligator styling clips to pin the top half of your hair up. Refresh your curls starting at the bottom half of your hair. Refreshing the top of your hair last will allow you to do the face framing details and finishing touches where it matters most.
05. Smooth down curls
Simply turn on a trickle of water in your sink or have a little bowl of water to dip your hands into. Use wet hands to gently smooth down the curls especially any dry ends. Adding additional styling products is optional and can help with adding hydration and hold.
In this video, I used Innersense I Create Lift for added hydration and a bit more hold without any stickiness or crunch. Here’s the BEFORE and AFTER!

This refresh only takes and few minutes to do and no drying is needed afterwards! Your can will air dry quickly and you’ll be ready to go in minutes.
