Before laying your curls down on a cotton pillowcase tonight and waking up to a crowning halo of frizz, try this!
“How are your curls not a complete mess in the morning?”
I’m often asked how it’s even possible to wear my hair curly every day. My tip is wearing my hair in one of these loose updos at night to prevent frizz and curl separation.
Whether you have long or short curly hair, here are two super simple and quick ways to wear your hair overnight. These protective hairstyles will help to preserve your top layer of curls while sleeping on them.
01. Loose Pull-through Bun
Recommended for: Long Hair, Wavy or Loose Curly Hair
Hair Accessory: Coily ponytail holder
Begin by starting a high ponytail, but don’t pull the hair all the way through. Instead, leave a loose bun and the ends out. The trick is to keep the bun high at the crown of your head to keep your hair up and away while you sleep. In the morning, just remove the bun and let your hair settle for about 10 minutes.

02. Loose Twist up
Recommended for: Short Hair, Long Hair, Wavy or Loose Curly Hair
Hair Accessory: Alligator styling clip or small/medium class clip
This is my favorite look anytime I need to put my hair up quickly – washing my face, at home workouts, household chores. For this style, I use alligator styling clips (with teeth) or a small/medium claw clip.
Simply gather your hair into a ponytail with your hands at the back of your head around eye level height. Then, loosely twist your hair clockwise and then point the ends of your hair up to the crown of your head. Clip your ends at the top of your head with one or two styling clips. In the morning, just remove the clips and let your hair settle for about 10 minutes.
The Cover-Up Tips
For both styles, sleeping on a silk pillowcase or wearing a scarf, bonnet, or hair buff over your hair will help to keep those baby hairs tucked in and relaxed throughout the night too.
It only takes a couple of extra minutes to protect your hair for day after day of wearable curls!
