Flat roots on curly hair are often a result of your styling routine. For the lift you’re looking for, try these tips to change up your routine and get more curl and volume at the roots.
How to Lift Flat Roots on Curly Hair
From styling to drying, little changes can make a big impact on your styling routine.
1. Style your hair upwards
Flat roots are often created when brushing or raking your curly hair down against your scalp while styling.
To style with lift, apply your products while holding your hair out to the side or lifting it up. This will help set your roots in the lifted position right from the start.
This works whether you prefer styling with your hair flipped upside down or an upright sectioning method.
2. Scrunch and Hold
We know that water provides extra definition to your curls and is key to styling. However, that water also adds weight that can contribute to flat roots. Especially on loose curls, the water weight can pull and lengthen the curl formation at the root.
To release the excess water weight and encourage the curl to form in its natural shaping, scrunch.
Be sure to scrunch gently at the roots and for a few seconds.

3. Diffuse Roots
Even if you prefer to air dry your curls, diffusing your roots for at least 5-10 minutes will help to set the curls in the lifted position. Try diffusing upside down or using a pick to lift them while drying.
After the initial diffusing, you can clip up your roots while you allow your hair to air dry the rest of the way.
4. Root Clips
If air drying is a key part of your curly hair styling routine, try root clips. They will keep your hair lifted and prevent flat roots from settling in.
A key tip is to open the root clips only slightly to hold a small amount of hair in a vertical position.
Use them to keep your parting in place and encourage lift where you want it most.

5. Comb Roots
Now, this is a fun trick that is perfect for loose curls. Use a hair pick to comb out the first inch or two of your roots to add volume. Note that this does break up your curl definition at the roots, but that extra air space is what can help give you more lift.
Better yet, to add lasting hold to that volume, apply hairspray to your hair pick and comb it in just where you want it.
Enjoy!
Curls are so vibrant and fun. They might need a little understanding at first, but they are destined to amaze you will all that they can do.
