Frizz-free volume has been my goal for years! But with my smooth styling routine, my curls are often compact and defined. So after my curls have dried, I have a few finishing tips to add volume and softness too.
Styling + Hair Products
In this video, I used Not Your Mother’s Curl Talk gel and mousse as a topper. The result was defined, compact ringlets. As much as I love the frizz-free styling, voluminous hair is more my vibe lately, so let’s make this hair bigger!
Adding Volume
On dry hair, work in loose sections staring at the bottom layer of curls. Separate the large curl clumps into several smooth curls. Pull apart slowly, especially at the ends to avoid any breakage.

The more curl families you create, the more space you add between each of your layers for the volume to stack up! This fuller look also creates a more uniform look to your various curl patterns.
No extra product is needed for this task. Still, should you need to refresh a curl, simply dip your hand in some water and smooth the curl back together.
Root volume
Next, fluff out your roots. Place your fingers or hair pick through your hair and gently shake the root of your hair back and forth. This helps to break up the curl clumps at your scalp to remove the definition. Lift and add hairspray or texture spray for added root volume.
Finishing Spray
To help the overall volume last, add hairspray or texture spray to keep the curls from nesting back together.
