Curls can go swimming anytime, any day, and every day! Enjoy the best of summer at the pool with these healthy hair tips.
Healthy Curls + Swimming? It’s Doable!
We know chlorinated pool water can strip our hair of natural oils, leaving it dry, frizzy, and bleached.
I’ve experienced the damage firsthand after being an active swimmer for many years. It resulted in a big chop that I was not ready for. Now, I follow these hair care tips to keep my curls happy and never skip out on the fun!

Hair Care Before You Swim
Don’t skip this step! Before diving in the pool, soak your hair thoroughly with fresh water. This may take a few minutes depending on your hair porosity, but is well worth extra care.
It’s important to note that filling your hair with fresh water first leaves less room for the pool water absorb.
Hair Care After Swimming
When taking a long break from swimming during the day, rinse your hair with fresh water. This is especially helpful if you’ll be sitting out in the sun afterwards.

Once you are done swimming for the day, rinse your hair fully with fresh water and follow up with a leave-in conditioner, your regular rinse out conditioner, or co-wash. Then, style as desired.
- Innersense Sweet Spirit Spray – A hydrating spray after your rinse at the pool
- Innersense Conditioner – Leave on for a few minutes before rinsing out to reset your curls.
- Bounce Curl Cream Conditioner – A hydrating conditioner to hydrate your curls
- Mixed Chicks Deep Conditioner – Love this one to hydrate and detangle too!
When to Detox
If you are swimming often, use a detox shampoo once a week followed by a hydrating conditioner. You can also try a swimmer’s shampoo and hydrating conditioner that neutralizes the chlorine to keep your hair healthy.

Whether you swim daily or occasionally, it’s possible to maintain healthy hair and swim as often as you’d like!
Happy summer!
