We’ve all been there. You’ve had a long week, you’re tired, and the thought of a full wash-and-style session feels overwhelming. You skip the wash, and the result is usually instant regret: a bad hair day that takes more effort to fix than it would have to just wash it in the first place.
Instead of throwing in the towel, try my mantra:
- It only takes three minutes to wash my hair.
- It only takes three minutes to wash my hair.
- I can do three minutes.
It doesn’t have to be a perfect wash day. We need a clean scalp and hair. Even if you don’t get every tangle or your hair isn’t perfectly moisturized, a clean base is always a better starting point. You’ll feel so much better afterward, and your hair and scalp will thank you.

The “I Don’t Feel Like Styling” Solutions
While a clean scalp is a must, a full curly hair styling session doesn’t have to be. Here are two low-effort ways to manage your hair on those days when you just can’t be bothered. No curl styling or straightening required!
Option 1: The Lazy Curly Hair Wash & Updo
Best for: Loose curls, wavy hair
Wash your hair in the evening, with just one step, using a cowash or conditioner. Use a scalp massager for about 10 seconds before rinsing. Then, wrap your hair in a hair towel to dry effortlessly.
Next, simply go to bed with loose, damp hair. Don’t bother with a full dry or style. In the morning, you’ll have a fresher, albeit messy, base to work. You can then do a low-effort updo, like a curly French twist or bun, to ease into the day.
Option 2: The Night Before Cleanse
Best for: Loose curls, wavy hair, tight curls, thick hair
Wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner for a deep clean. If you can muster an extra minute of energy, just raking in a bit of leave-in conditioner or mousse before stepping out of the shower will go a long way.
Then, wrap your hair into a simple bun or braid for sleeping. This will keep your hair in a more compact state overnight. In the morning, you’ll have a fresh base to work with. You can then restyle your hair into a low-effort updo, like a sleek twisted bun or simple braid.
Option 3: The Morning Wet Style
Best for: Loose curls, wavy hair
Wash your hair in the morning, doing either a full cleanse or co-wash, rake in some leave-in conditioner, and give it a quick towel dry. Then immediately style your damp hair into a simple French braid or bun. This gives you a simple, put-together look for the day and a style you can repeat the next day.
The Effortless Finish
For a polished-looking finish to your morning updos, take a few seconds to use a bit of hairspray or mousse to smooth any frizz along the edges and ends of your hair. It’s a simple step, but it delivers a huge boost of confidence by making your quick updo look completely intentional and chic.
Feel Good, Look Good
Remember, the goal isn’t always perfection—it’s progress. A quick wash is always a win, and there are plenty of easy ways to look good and feel good without a ton of effort. You’ve got this!
