I love knowing that I can have natural looking curls even with styling. These simple tips help to keep my curls intact, all while helping them stay lifted and full throughout my styling routine.
Try these styling tips for natural-looking curls from roots to ends.
Styling Tips | Root Lift + Defined Curls
01. Style the top of your hair last – Whether you prefer upsidedown or upright styling, try styling the top of your hair last for more control over the finished result.
02. Sectioning – Apply your styling product on thin sections of hair to get even distribution.
03. Add water – Wet styling is the key to styling defined curls. If your hair starts to dry during styling, add more water to keep your curls smooth and frizz-free.

04. Raking / Clawing Technique – Apply your styling product while raking or clawing with your fingers to create smooth and defined curl families. This helps to prevent stringy and separated curls.
05. Finger Coiling – Don’t think of finger coiling as an all-or-nothing technique. You can use it on just a few curls that need a little extra shaping.
06. Create lifted roots – Styling the top of your hair in a lifted position instead of pressing down. This will set your roots in a lifted position and give them more room to form a curl.

07. Scrunch – Scrunch lightly at the root to encourage curl formation. This works great for wavy hair and loose curls, as the water weight can lengthen the curl shape.
08. Root Clipping – Clip the roots up while air drying. It’s best to diffuse for a least 5-10 minutes beforehand to help set the curls before clipping.
