I recently shared a video of my favorite tips from the curly girl method and hope that they are helpful for you too.
There is so much to explain! I have definitely benefited from Curly Girl: The Handbook as have many curlies all around the world. It is the book that defines the method and guidelines for caring for and styling naturally curly hair. It appreciate that it gave me more encouragement to continue my healthy hair journey and supported my decision to wear my hair curly every day.
From curly girl method approved product guidelines and styling recommendations, there are just 3 main steps of Cleansing, Conditioning, and Styling.
Cleansing Curly Hair
Cleansed hair and scalp is the start of a healthy hair care routine. But as shampoos are all formulated differently, it can be overwhelming to know what to use. So, to aid in keeping curls hydrated and happy, the curly girl method specifically advocates against using shampoos that contain sulfates. Sulfates are categorized as being strong detergents that are too harsh for curly hair and contribute to dryness and frizz.

Healthy Conditioning
While thoroughly cleansed curls are the start of a healthy hair routine, conditioning and hydration is the magic. And here again, the curly girl method advises to look for key ingredients of botanical based conditioners without silicones. Yes, silicones advertise their smoothing and shine benefits, but they also repel water and prevent dry hair from absorbing much needed moisture. Therefore, steering away from silicones help with maintaining hydrated curls and minimizing frizz. The conditioning stage is also the perfect time for detangling and priming the hair for styling.

Styling
The Curly Girl handbook also provides tutorials for styling different curl types and options for preferences of more definition or volume. Still, the common key for keeping styled curls hydrated is by using a styling gel, but not just any gel. It should be an alcohol-free gel, preferably with botanical ingredients as well.
