It’s all about the claw clips for my daughter this year. With her new middle school schedule, the busy back-to-school routine no longer allows for Mama’s everyday twists and braids. It’s bittersweet for me as we transition into a new season of life, but it’s so rewarding to see her learning to style her own hair now too.
We’ve collected a pile of claw clips so far, even while only a few actually get used. Some are so cute but hardly match any outfit, while others just don’t hold up the hair much at all.
Here are the favorites, plus the conditioner that’s been a staple in her routine for years!
Curly Girl Back-to-School Hair Styling Favorites
Wild Fable Rectangle Frosted Jumbo Claw Hair Clip – After a full wash & style routine, this claw clip will surprisingly hold up my daughter’s thick, high-density curls in a twist-up for an all-day updo. We let it air dry in the updo to keep the curls from expanding beforehand.
Teleties Large Hair Claw Clip (Classic Almond Beige) – This neutral claw clip is easy to wear with almost any outfit. It’s super strong and guaranteed to not break! Whether it’s a casual or sporty occasion, this claw clip is a top pick.

Teleties Medium Hair Claw Clip – This standard-size clip is perfect for half-up hairstyles. It’s a great help, when you don’t want to refresh all of your hair, but still want a fresh new style.
L. Erickson Hair Elastics – The only ponytail holders we use for a tight hold! These thick hair bands are easy to use and won’t snag your curls.
Mixed Chicks Detangling Deep Conditioner – This conditioner has been her favorite for years! We buy this pump size on Amazon for easy application in the shower. She definitely uses too much as she’s learning how to detangle her own hair, but it’s a learning process. This conditioner quickly melts into the hair and helps to slip out all the knots and tangles. Best of all, it leaves the hair feeling clean and soft without any waxy or oily residue.
