If there ever was a curly hair BFF, it just might be the silky scarf for all love, styling and protection it provides.

And yes, silky can refer to actual silk, as it is quite the loveliest, but it can be other affordable substitutes as well. I’ve been heartbroken over snagged silk scarves, so I’ve since added silky dupes to my collection. Some were as low as $8 a piece with fabulous results!
There are silky headbands, silky scrunchies and silky pillowcases too, but the classic silky scarf is still a staple for oh so many occasions. Let us count the ways!
Protecting the Curls
01. The Overnight Scarf Headwrap
My favorite size of scarf for this task is an extra-large scarf at 42 inches square. It can do all the things on this list, but is a bit large for use a just a hair accessory.

02. The Pillowcase Cover
If you don’t have a silky pillowcase, this is a simple option to avoid the friction that cotton and flannel pillowcases can cause on your hair and skin. The larger scarf size is ideal for this as well as it is less likely to slip off the pillow during the night.
03. Pullover Protection
Don’t forget this! This is a lifesaver during the winter with textured sweaters. Simply drape the scarf over your head and face while pulling your clothing on or off. Voila!
This is a trick from the fashion modeling world that protects your hair and makeup (as well as the clothing) during outfit changes.
04. Hat & Hood Protection
Ah, hats and hoods can help to protect us from the weather, but can also have materials that can snag our curls. A simple scarf wrap can certainly be a stylish way to protect the curls underneath a sun hat, or a winter coat hood as well.
04. Weather Protection
Unfortunately, an umbrella can protect our hair form getting wet, but it doesn’t protect our curls from the added moisture in the air, or the wind. So, if you are ever walking out in adverse weather, try a silky scarf wrap, even securing it with a cute tie under the chin.
06. Fabric Headrest Protection
Whatever your mode of transportation, don’t let that fabric headrest ruin your glorious hair day. Just wrap it with a scarf to avoid any snagging or static cling.
Styling the Curls
07. Scrunch out the Crunch
My favorite way to scrunch out my gel crunch is with a silky scarf. I’ve used my hands, I’ve tried oil, but I’ve always been happier with the smooth, frizz-free results from a silky scarf.
Tip: Stash a small bandana scarf in your purse to scrunch out the crunch while on the go.

08. The Hair Accessory
Scarves have always been a classically chic hair accessory. I love folding the scarf in half as a triangle, adding a knot in the middle, and tying the scarf at the base of my neck for a chic knotted headband. It says in place and will never snag my curls. Of course, the simple scarf wraps around ponytails and buns are also forever fashionable.

Bonus Benefits
09. Ultimate Travel buddy
For all of the above reasons, the silky scarf is the ultimate travel buddy. I use it as my silky pillowcase or night bonnet, my hair accessory, my fashion accessory, and styling assistant to scrunch out the crunch. Less to pack and less to lose in the hotel room…
10. Pretty Vanity Cover
This is a vanity secret that I love sharing. As I always have a scarf at my vanity for my curl care, I also use it to cover all my perfumes and products on my vanity countertop while showering. This keeps the steam and dust at bay for a clean display.
