I love hair transformations, especially when the results can be seen in just minutes! I’ve been loving this curl refresh hack lately to wear my hair down all week. Here’s the trick of it.

My hair type:
Wavy curly hair, medium length, medium density, medium hair strand thickness
Overnight Curls
First, I need to share that I protect my curls overnight. I mostly wear my up in a loose twist-up, secured with a styling clip. If I’m in the mood, I’ll cover it with a hair buff or silk scarf, which is ideal for ultimate curl protection. During these warmer spring & summer months, however, I’ll definitely skip that extra coverage. What I never go without, however, is a silk pillowcase. It’s a must-have for less friction on the hair (compared to cotton) to help prevent frizz.
Morning Hair
Yep, when I first take my hair down, it’s not always pretty. It will take about 10-15 minutes to settle. Sometimes it might only need a little fluffing of the roots, sometimes it needs a full refresh. I recently shared this video of day 4 hair, that definitely needed some TLC. With this curl refresh hack, it only took 5 minutes to revive my curls!
Try This
Of course, a full damp refresh gives the best overall results all around. But…we have those days where we just need a hack to get through the morning and still rock our curls. So, after my hair has settled, I’ll section off the very top layer of my hair. The rest of the hair will be clipped down and out of the way. Then, I’ll do a curl-by-curl refresh on only this top layer of curls.
Curl by Curl Refresh
Start with a bowl of water, or fill the sink with enough to dip your hands. Find a curl family and with wet hands, smooth out the frizz by pressing the water down through the length of the curl. Add a spot of gel if needed too. You can try a spray bottle but still smooth out each curl individually for the best curl definition. Once you’ve finished all of the curls in this top layer, you’re done. No drying is needed! You can air dry the rest of the way or dry with a diffuser for a couple of minutes (good for cold weather days).
Here are my results! Check out this video to see this rushed curl refresh in action.
