If your loose curls need a lift at the roots, these 5 styling tips are the key to a more uniform curl pattern from root to tip. From styling to drying, little changes can make a big impact on your styling routine.

1. Style your hair upwards to keep your hair lifted off your scalp
Instead of brushing your hair down against your scalp while styling, try lifting your hair up from the scalp. You can apply your styling products while holding your hair out to the side or lifting vertically. This will aid in setting your roots in the lifted position right from the start. This can work whether you prefer styling with your hair flipped upside down or an upright sectioning method.
2. Scrunch and hold to encourage curls to form at the root
After you’ve applied your styling products, slowly scrunch your hair up to your roots and hold for a few seconds. This will help your loose curls form at the roots. Why? The water that provides extra definition to your curls while styling, will also weigh down your loose curls. So, a lift and scrunch will help encourage the curl to form in its natural shaping and release the excess water weight. Be sure to do this slowly and only once or twice per section. Any more than that and you risk breaking up your curl clumps and creating frizz.
3. Diffuse roots in a lifted position
When drying your hair, keep your roots in a lifted position either by diffusing upside down or using a pick to lift them while drying. Even if you prefer to air dry, diffusing your roots for at least 5-10 minutes will help to set the curls in the lifted position. After the initial diffusing, you can clip up your roots while you allow your hair to air dry the rest of the way.
4. Use root clips to air dry and hold your parting style in place
If air drying is a key part of your styling routine, try using root clips to keep your hair lifted while drying. Open the root clips only slightly to hold a small amount of hair in a vertical position. Use them to keep your parting in place and encourage lift where you want it most. There is no perfect positioning of the root clips. Just decide how you want your hair to look and insert the clips at the roots.
5. Finally, comb out roots and add hair hairspray for added hold and lasting hold
Now, this is a fun trick that is perfect for loose curls. Use a hair pick to comb out the first inch or two of your roots to add volume. It does break up your curl definition at the roots, but that extra air space is what can help give your more lift. Better yet, to add lasting hold to that volume, apply hairspray to your hair pick and comb it in just where you want it.
Enjoy!
Curls are so vibrant and fun. They might need a little understanding at first, but they are destined to amaze you will all that they can do.
